Missing Missions

by Donna on September 17, 2010

In January 2003 I was blessed to head off to Australia to join 86 other youth for a 6 month adventure. I was YWAM bound!

A little about Youth With a Mission (from their site)

“Youth With A Mission is an international volunteer movement of Christians from many backgrounds, cultures and Christian traditions, dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Also known as YWAM (pronounced “WHY-wham”), our purpose is simply to know God and to make Him known.

When YWAM began in 1960, our main focus was giving young people opportunities to demonstrate the love of Jesus to the whole world, according to His command in Mark 16:15. Today, we still focus on youth, but we have members (known as “YWAMers”) of almost every age and many of our short-term efforts have grown into long-term endeavors that have impacted lives and nations.

YWAM has a decentralized structure that encourages new vision and the exploration of new ways to change lives through training, convey the message of the gospel and care for those in need. We are currently operating in more than 1000 locations in over 150 countries, with a staff of nearly 16,000.”

I lived in a house with 9 other woman, we all shared 1 bathroom! I’m pretty sure that the time spent in the house was one of the more character building times in my life. Personality clashes and DRAMA were daily events.

I spent 13 weeks in what is called the ‘lecture’ phase allowing God to tear down and reconstruct not only my self-worth but my identity in HIM.

We then spent the remainder of our 6 months traveling to other countries doing outreach. I did my outreaches in New Zealand in both Auckland and Gisborne. I also spent a month in Darwin (the northernmost part of Australia). We worked with some beautiful and hurting people.

It was AMAZING!

I miss it every.single.day.

Am I discontent in my life right now, NO. Do I miss the amazing sense of community I lived in, the consistent times of prayer and worship. YES!

I’ve been working hard to try to bring my life back to that place, not physically but spiritually. I am trying to getting up early, read the Word and worship more and remember what our purpose is.

I took out my guitar the other day for the first time in nearly 2 years and it felt great!

The good news …

My husband,  children, family, and friends are all available and willing to accept love, kind deeds and kind words. I’m working hard to transform our home into a sanctuary; filled with worship, filled with peace, filled with words of love. My missions field.

Thanks for sharing, Donna! I wish I had gotten to do a missionary experience like that. We have a friend who did Reef to Outback & some who are working in Mt. Isa (outback). Seems like everyone around here does YWAM, which is so cool!

I hope to do the same in our home! m :)
